Musings on a Wal-mart Trampling
“Black Friday” has a new name: “Devoid of Light Friday.” Sure the name is supposed to relate to the day when retail stores are out of the red (loss) and into the black (profit), but after hearing of the death of a Wal-Mart worker that was trampled to death by a mob of “Black Friday” shoppers. Are you serious?
What is the value of a human life compared to a discounted product? What type of person could actually stampede over someone that is injured on the ground and just leave them to be trampled by a throng of people?
Is it true that some shoppers were bummed because they had to leave the store after hearing of the man’s death? Really? So now you can’t save that extra $5 on that cool gadget you wanted and you have to leave the store because you all just trampled someone to death, and you’re upset about getting kicked out. Really!?!
Who is to blame? Wal-Mart? The crowd? Marketing agencies?
Our nation is stricken with the disease of accumulation and we will do whatever it takes to get the next thing. It is a frenzy of accumulation! It is truly an absence of light and understanding about the true meaning of life.
The day after Thanksgiving our television sets, billboards and mailers are all screaming at us to buy, buy, buy and SAVE BIG! So what do we do? Obey!
Shame on someone, somewhere. Shame for the ability to enthrall so many people across our country to aggressively empty our wallets and more importantly, our humanity. For one brief period of our lives we are savages. We consume not only products, but anything and everything that stands in our way. Shame on someone, somewhere for making us do this. I mean, they are making us do it…aren’t they?
