This is my feelings on the use of someone’s social website as a character reference for employment.

America is supposed to be a land of freedom of speech and such, so why would that affect a person’s employment? I have to ask that question due to things I have heard about employers being able to use Google to find a person’s social site or reference a person online? I have got to ask the question though, why would anyone judge a person by a social site unless that is the site given for a resume reference?

Honestly, I think this is line crossing at invasion of privacy. After all, some sites are meant to be funny and shared with friends, not employers. Some of the sites might just be a showcase of a person’s sense of humor and should not be a considered a reference of what a potential employee will do or act like at work. I think anyone who does this act should be sited for a form of discrimination–as the only thing employers should be concerned about is a criminal record or job history and not how silly a person is on their web site.

Someone has got to say something about this–I feel that these employers should be reminded of the constitution of the U.S. If you ran across an actor’s site with silly video footage or something, would that stop you from hiring him? Hiring should be based on skills and experience not some silly website the applicant created for comedy purposes. After all, fair and equal treatment should be just that, and so many employers are allowed to discriminate against so many things not protected by law on this issue and others, I feel I have to say one thing, “Cut it out!”
