Oil is very important in the cook’s life. It is used for frying, sauté, and even in the salad dressings. Through the years, there were various oils that have been made to be used for cooking, cosmetics, soaps and even as a biofuel which is used for the cars.

The most popular oil in the world is the olive oil. Olive oil came from the olive tree that originated in the Mediterranean countries. Olive oil is so rich in monounsaturated fats that help reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke because monounsaturated fat reduces the bad cholesterol levels. This oil is mostly used in salad dressings, but it can also be used for sautéing. When used for cooking, extra virgin oil should not exceed the temperature of 190 degrees Celsius, virgin olive oil at 215 degrees Celsius and refined olive oil should only be until 225 degrees Celsius only.

Canola oil is from the rapeseeds that belong to the mustard and cabbage family. This plant is a native to Canada. Canola oil is not only used in cooking, but it is also used in cosmetics such as lipsticks, candles, inks for newspapers and also as a biofuel for cars. It is high in monounsaturated fats and it also has omega-3 which is good to reduce risk for heart disease. It is considered as the healthiest oil amongst the common cooking oils.

Palm oil obviously came from palm trees. It contains 39 percent monounsaturated fats. It does not have cholesterol but because of the high content of saturated fat, it will not be good for the heart. Do not use too much when you are cooking, the lesser, the better.

Sunflower oil is used for frying, but in some cases, it is also used for cosmetics. It is from the sunflower seeds. Sunflower oil is high in Vitamin E which is good for cardiovascular and low in saturated fat which is just about 11%. Due to its vitamin E content, sunflower oil is also used as an ingredient for skin moisturizer.
