How to keep the passion alive and ourselves on track during those not so rewarding times.

We all know that rush of excitement as we start a new project or a new venture or even a new business. We also know what it feels like when we come across stumbling blocks or we find that we need to adapt our plans as problems arise. So how do we keep the joy alive and ourselves on track during those not so rewarding times?

1) Remember your motivation for starting

Why did you start this business or project in the first place? What where the underlying motives? For me it was finally getting to use my creativity and personal expression along with a desire to call the shots on my own projects. I had also got very tired of working for other people and helping someone else’s business flourish. I need only look back at the jobs I have had in the past to remind myself why it is that I work for myself.

2) “Obstacles” are natural

There really is no such thing as an obstacle. Sure, there will be times when you are challenged on your self belief or motivation yet anticipating this merely strengthens your resolve. As a writer I do not expect every single article to be viewed by millions or for every single freelance article to be published. So you now see that there is no such thing as rejection only ideas for improvement. Now if I do start to worry too much, whether that be regarding paying bills or writers block or any other issues, I merely go back to point 1.

3) Small victories.

Daily goals are important as well as weekly, monthly, yearly and full blown life goals. If I only focused on the black Lamborghini Murcielago I would no doubt become more frustrated! However giving myself smaller goals in addition to the other goals does keep my confidence and sense of accomplishment going. If I am having a really tough day then just a simple goal of mapping out one article idea can give me momentum. When you are stuck like that it really does feel as if you are trying to leave the earth’s gravitational field. That one tiny goal accomplished can be the extra booster rocket you need to get you through that barrier.

4) Take a break.

Sometimes that is all you need. A quick break to refresh and rejuvenate your passion. Completely focusing on something else will give your mind a different outlook and allow your subconscious to work silently in the background. You will return with a new outlook and less tension. This inner relaxation can be another booster for your momentum.

5) Treat yourself the way you always wanted you previous employers to treat you.

Seriously. Reward yourself and give yourself credit. Look at where you were and where you are now and where you are heading. Pat yourself on the back for having the guts to break away from the world and for venturing out on your own. Write down what you have accomplished and display it somewhere. Be proud of your achievements no matter how small they may seem for there is no such thing as small achievement -only achievement!

Remember that you started your project with passion and enthusiasm. That passion and enthusiasm has not gone anywhere; it still lies within you. Rediscover it and keep the passion alive!
