Life is Not Easy in Call Centers-they Create Professionals
This article provides brief information about the procedures that an applicant has to go through, to become call center’s employee and finally evolve as a professional.
All around the world there is praise and criticism of a relatively new industry in India, called Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). The industry is wide in its operations and is more commonly known as the Call Center Industry.
We all in India are proud to set up this industry and think that we are being praised all over the world. Sometimes we get disappointed, reading the newspapers mentioning, the U.S and U.K may pull their call center operations due to unemployment there. However, the disappointment doesn’t remains for long, as next day we read, the industry is doing really well to the economy.
Many times people like me, who have worked or are working in the call centers, are asked how the life in the call centre is. How do you manage to work whole night? Are the calls simple or are these technical?
The fact is not that simple as all may think. I was part of this Industry for about five years and have learnt maximum there. I have taken technical calls for an American accounting software in 24/7 shift environment. It’s not a trouble free job.
In India, call centers have changed the lives of many youngsters. This Industry gave opportunity to one of the largest populated country, where you will find many people without the technical knowledge. These people are simply graduates in the streams like arts, commerce etc. but they possess one capability i.e. spoken English.
With huge number of people being educated in India, a graduate stands nil value. However, call centers changed it all. It opened the avenues for people like me, a graduate, who wanted to earn fast money. Not only the graduates but with the increased demands of the jobs, many companies have now started offering jobs to undergraduates. The condition is only one “good spoken English”.
For a person who has just passed out from a college or is an undergraduate, it is difficult to crack an interview. The interview is conducted in various rounds that are designed to grill a person for his/her spoken English. One is evaluated on an area of possibility, if he/she can learn to speak in neutral accent, in the minimum time frame.

Well, I’m glad you had a swell time at a call centre. I must admit though I’m not a massive fan of call centres because often I have some random people call my house and they go “Excuse me ma’am, I am calling from this low cost calling thing blah blah would you like a yada yada yada…” and I’m just like “Hold up, hold up, hold up, I’m only 17, DON’T call me ma’am (it’s like for people who are 40)! Ask my dad! I don’t have to call, India my dad does though!” But I like the way you offer a different perspective on it (and HELL the process seems gruelling – although I can talk for England, I wouldn’t like to go through it” and I must say, after reading this article, I will try and be more considerate of the peeps on the other end of the line!
Thanks Atikin. I am really happy about the fact that you understood the message in the article and you are thinking of being considerate. Thanks again.
