Self-Employment Success: The Necessary Personality Traits
To succeed in self-employment, one must possess or acquire certain key personality traits.

This article will list a few personality traits necessary to successfully run one’s own business as well as some tips on how to make the traits effective.
1. Pro-active
Number one on the list is pro-activity.
While we all dream of being our own boss, setting our own hours, coming and going whenever we’d like; it can only be made possible when we step outside of our daydreams and actually pro-actively work for what we want. Many people spend their whole lives in their dreams…if you really want something you CAN make it happen.
How you ask? Many people find starting slowly is most helpful when they are unsure of the new career-leap. Such things are helpful:
- Making priority lists of what needs to get done first before this happens and so forth.
- Complete tasks in order.
- Set daily goals.
- Self-help success books & In-person self-help presentations.
- Create a personal support system. (i.e., people who BELIEVE in you)
- Utilize resources (i.e., internet, library, others in the business, etc.)
2. Perseverance
Starting anything new can give way to unexpected fears, doubts and worries that kept dreaming and not doing to begin with. Perseverance through the toughest business moments is crucial. A personal support system as well as reading about other self-employed business person’s struggles and successes can help keep one motivated to persevere when different aspects of the business become difficult. There will always be some issue that comes up that one did not expect. Perseverance can see one through these tough times.
3. People Skills
Though many personal businesses may not deal with much interpersonal business relationships – all businesses will deal with people. Treating contacts, colleagues and potential clients with the utmost respect and highest level of customer service will help to ensure the longevity, success and growing demand for the business product. Positive word of mouth is one of the best forms of advertisement while, on the other hand, negative word of mouth has been known to completely uproot companies.
Anyone can start their own business, but it takes hard work, the “know-how” skills, and belief in one’s business vision. So go out there and make YOUR dreams come alive!!
