The Most Common Mistakes in a Job Search
Many people make the same mistakes when they are searching for a job. These simple mistakes will greatly diminish their success at finding a job.
The Most Common Mistakes In A Job Search
Mistake #1 – Limiting the time and effort you put in a job search
The job search itself must be your top priority. The key to job search success is to put all distractions aside and focus on the search. You must dramatically limit the time you spend on leisure activities and maximize the time you spend using all your job search resources.
Mistake #2 – Limiting the research you do in a job search
The #1 reason people don’t work out when they’re hired by an employer is not that they can’t do the job, but that they don’t fit in. In other words, they take the right job with the wrong employer. Doing careful research helps you avoid such a situation. When you go to work for the wrong employer, your performance is hindered and your status with the employer is diminished. To put it another way, substandard research virtually guarantees a substandard work experience. Use the Internet to assess the potential employer and focus on those organizations where you’re likely to be comfortable.
Mistake #3 – Limiting your search to a few job boards
There are over 40,000 job boards in operation on the Internet. In addition to the ones that you’ve seen advertised, there are hundreds and hundreds of others that you may not have heard about. To find your ideal job online, you have to use enough sites to cover the job market and the right ones to insure you have blanketed your particular field.
Mistake #4 – Limiting yourself to just reading job postings
Job ads posted online reveal only a portion of the job market. There are many more openings, including some of the best positions, that aren’t advertised. To find this so-called “hidden job market,” you have to make contact and develop relationships with others online. This is referred to as electronic networking. You should participate in discussion forums and bulletin boards hosted on the sites of such groups as your professional association. Share your knowledge of job fields and positions, so that they will be inclined to share their knowledge of job openings and their inside connections with you.
Mistake #5 – Limiting the preparation you do for interviews
In today’s highly competitive job market, the interview begins with the first contact with an employer. That means you have to be well prepared and at the top of your game at all times. First, make sure that you thoroughly investigate each employer to which you apply. Visit its website and use a browser to search for information published by other sources. Also, use the information and insights you’ve acquired to articulate the contribution you will make to the employer. We tend to fall back on old habits in our job search. When you’re looking for a new or better job, they can lead to poor work ethics that limits your opportunity and potential success. They are the bad habits of ineffective job searches. These are the roadblocks that could prevent you from finding your dream job.
