What to Do with All My Plastic Bags!
Plastic bags, what should we do with them all? how many do we use? this article answers those questions.
308 billion bags, that is 308,000,000,000 plastic bags get thrown out every year in the US alone, tossed into the trash, tossed out of cars, blown into trees, you name it. i am not going to be one of those people who start talking about carbon emissions or anything along those lines. and only about 2% of those bags become recycled. The best thing to do would be try to recycle and reuse as many plastic bags as we can, and one of the best ways to do that is to turn it into plarn (plastic yarn).
100 billion plastic bags used are shopping bags. other plastic bags hold potatoes, bread, newspapers, etc. the shear amount of plastic bags that just get tossed in the trash is enormous. that is why crocheting and knitting plarn is labeled a good idea by me. It takes me on average about 60-70 plastic bags to create a reasonably sized tote bag out of plarn. That is 60-70 plastic bags less in the landfill. I myself work predominately in plarn, although other materials are used. So far I have made 8 plarn bags and saved a estimated 400 plastic bags from the landfill. Example of some of my works are below.

This is a plarn bag that I have crocheted out of about 75-80 dollar general bags.

Another plarn bag I made out of about 70 plastic grocery bags
So this is a good idea to keep the plastic bags out of the landfill and away from oceans and wildlife. Wildlife die every day by inhaling, strangling themselves in or eating plastic bags on accident, and the easiest thing to do to prevent it is lower the amount of plastic bags are in use and recycle all of them that we can so that the wildlife is safe.

Sell your crocheted plastic bags on etsy.com they love stuff like this. Homemade/recycled items, and this is such an original idea!
Thanks thestickman, will do!
Farmers markets and craft sales might be cool too, but thats tough.
Anyhow thanks for saving the planet, we use all our bags for cat litter, and use reusable bags for shopping. I cannot crochet but this is a great idea for those who can
I crochet a lot, but I use nylon bags for almost all of my shopping, so I don’t collect very many plastic bags. It does sound like a good idea – the item would be waterproof.
I saw a bit on TV about a woman who was crocheting hats with plastic bags, it sounds like the same thing. I was a bit shocked though when the camera crew followed her to a store where the cashier gave her a pile of unused plastic bags – that doesn’t really count as saving the planet!
Your tote bags look really cute. I hope you find a market for them.
Thankyou, I hope to be selling them soon.
I love stuff like this!
The pictures are lovely.
