Will the Columbia City Theater Go Down with the Times?
Is it on the list of fine historical venues that will fail to make it through the recession?
It’s amazing to think about all the business’s that have been closing in the Seattle area. The recent recession is not being kind to some of Seattle’s finest establishments.
Starbucks, Boeing and Wamu being some of the few big name corps that have had to lower there numbers just to try and float through to the end of the recession.
Plenty of local entertainment establishments have also bitten the dust. The Phoenix Underground, the J & M Cafe, and a few others have either changed ownership, or shut down completely until further notice.
The diminishing number of payin clientele that used to peruse their joints no longer come around as regularly as they used to, and as much as anyone can avoid it, no one is spending their hard earned money on anything.
Especially those hard working stiffs who used to enjoy a night out once in a while. You just don’t know who is going to start laying off next, so everyone is saving their pennies and clamping shut their wallets.
In this wake of immense savings and none spending, most of Seattle’s bars, nightclubs and night time entertainment establishments are turning back to live music to try and draw a stable revenue.
With his rental prices cutting the amount that the bands, and industry professional made at the end of a night, as well as the high priced drinks and not so nice local neighborhood, it is understandable that they should have such hard times.
Sadly, after only a comparably small amount of time getting their feet wet in the local scene, it appears that the theater is retreating back into its traditional setting as an exclusive entertainment facility, only available to those who can afford it.
What makes this even more disheartening, is that they really gave in before giving the local scene a chance to get to know their venue as a place to find great night time entertainment.
With romantic candle lit tables, a huge dance floor, and the best stage in town to play on, they really could have done a lot with their establishment, had they fully circum to the public and its desires.
With the theater drawing back into itself, it is anyones guess whether they will be another historical seattle venue to go down with the times…
