 In 1971, Michael Hart was given $100 million worth of mainframe computer time by the Materials Research Lab at the University of Illinois. He developed the concept of taking books and other documents that were no longer restricted by copyright and making them available electronically to anyone who had access to a computer modem. The first document he entered, into what would later become the Project Gutenberg database, was the “Declaration of Independence.” Approximately 40 texts are still being entered each month. These titles fall into the public domain and were published prior to 1923.However, there are people who dispute it as the first e-book but accept it only the first e-text.

 Generally e-books are considered excellent money makers and a great viral marketing tool and they promote immense website traffic.
