So, you have seen the worst. The world’s economy has spiraled downwards, and you have felt the pinch some way or another. Now, things are picking up. At last you’ve found a job that’s perfect for you. After sending your resume, you receive a call and learn that you’ve been been shortlisted for the position. So how can you make the most of the interview and secure your dream job?

Before the Interview

  1. Check the location

Make sure that you have googled or checked the directory for the address of the interview venue. Do not do this last minute or you will end up messing up on the great opportunity. Do check the company website, if possible, for the exact location of the area.

  2. Get your portfolio ready

Depending on the nature of the job, if you want to be a writer or artist, make sure you get your portfolio ready and organised. A neat and organised portfolio will be an impressive tool to help you clinch that spot.

  3. Prepare a list of questions

You need to prepare a list of questions in case the interviewer asks you for them. It also shows that you are well prepared for the interview and that you are serious about getting the job. Ask intelligent questions like, “What are the career advancement options?”

  4. Get enough rest

Before the big day, make sure you have sufficient rest the day before. This is to ensure that you are in tip-top condition for the next day’s interview and that you don’t appear like you have just survived a wreck. So do yourself a favour: Rest!

    On the Day Itself…

  5. Be punctual

A lot of employers are very particular about punctuality. It actually reflects your attitude as an employee. So make sure you adhere to the interview time and don’t be late. Excuses like “I have to walk my dog” have to be saved away in your recycle bin.

  6. Dress properly

Depending on the job nature, make sure you dress appropriately for the interview. For guys, make sure your shirt is ironed and is looking crisp and neat. Also, wearing a tie is advisable. Do not appear wearing singlets or bermudas and slippers. You are not going on a holiday! Remember, first impressions do count.

  7. Be confident and wear a smile

Show that you are approachable and friendly. Smiling also exudes confidence. So yes. Be polite and confident and you are on your way to the job!

  8. Check your posture

Sit in an upright position during the interview. Do not slouch or fold your arms, if not, you are either showing signs that you are uninterested or simply rude.

  9. Maintain eye contact

When speaking to the interviewer, make sure you maintain eye contact at all times. This will show that you are sincere and confident. Do not let your nervousness take over you. If you have been eyeing for that dream job, make sure you keep this in mind!

  10. Speak at a normal pace

When it is your turn to speak, make sure you regulate the pace. Do not speak too fast or too slow.

  11. Be humble and honest

Honesty is the best policy. Do not try bragging about your previous achievements. They should already be reflected on your resume. Sometimes, eating a humble pie is the way to go!

  12. Thank the interviewer

When the interview has ended, always make a point to thank the interviewer. Do it with a smile and be sincere about it. It is a last impression you have to make, so make a good and lasting one.
