Five Interview Mistakes Commonly Made
Most job seekers are not aware of making mistakes before and during an interview. Learn what these mistakes are and how to avoid these dilemmas.
Overconfidence or Lack of Confidence
Being too confident during the interview can be an obstacle for the interview session as interviewers may be presumed as a braggarts who actually talk too much. But can he or she deliver? Definitely you can highlight your major strengths without sounding too boastful and exaggerating too much.
Avoiding direct eye-contact can leave a negative impression since this action is viewed as lack of confidence or your potential employer may perceive you as lacking experience for a vacant job. Additionally, being nervous or stressed can also create a negative effect that you are trying to cover something or you are not being truthful.
Lack of Preparation
A job candidate who does not bother to do pre-interview research will finally end up with poor communication and job failure. Prior to the interview, do some research on the background of the company in terms of company’s annual sales, products, and services, structure in addition to other key information. This information can be easily gathered from internet, former employees, professional magazines, or the localized libraries. Rehearse speaking with confidence and clarity before the interview and be prepared with the answers to possible commonly asked questions during the interview. Do not forget to bring along relevant documents and an extra copy of your resume to support you, just in case.
Unnecessary Jabber
It is not seen as mature to talk too much or to converse about nonsense while failing to listen or understand the questions being asked. You should behave wisely by listening attentively to the questions as they are being given, and be concise and brief while answering the questions to show that you understand the questions completely instead of rambling around the topic. That means you should give clear and straight to the point answers.
You should always mind your tongue and be careful with your choice of words before you say anything. This is important to avoid any misunderstanding and also to avoid saying inappropriate and unnecessary things. By right, you should practice by yourself to answer questions in a direct manner. To achieve this goal, prepare yourself using a role-play practice as this will help avoid nervous talking.
Avoid being Critical of Previous or Current Employers
It is not wise move to complain much especially about your previous or current employers. Or else, you are seen to be a complainer. Keep in mind that you should promote yourself as the best candidate for a vacant job instead of complaining about your previous or current employers. When you are asked about your previous employers make sure that you are prepared with a positive spin on your previous career experiences.
Poor Time Management
One of the foremost things in job-searching etiquette is that you turn up for the interview section punctually. That means you need to turn up 10 minutes earlier. Running in late for your interview could mean a negative impression to your potential employer. Nevertheless, turning up too early can also create a poor first impression as well.
To better manage your time, you should wear a watch before going out. Alternatively, get a map from the interviewer so that you know the exact location and be able to plan your time accordingly, to get there promptly. In case something unexpected happens causing you running late for the interview; you should make an attempt to call the interviewer to reschedule the interview.
