A concise plan to get more 50+ years olds working using stimulus funding and the Workforce Initiative Act.

If you read, “Employment after 50 a dicey proposition” we do not need to reiterate the problems especially in this economy of finding a job after being down-sized. Ageism is a huge issue. The cost of offering health insurance is higher as the employee ages.

These are the people carrying the burden of the taxes in this country- if they are not working they are not paying taxes, these are the people most affected by the huge losses in their 401k account during the recent economic meltdown. These baby boomer will be joining the ranks of the social security crowd in as few as 6-10   years. The people need to be making money now so they will not be such a burden on the Medicare and social security system later.

Considering that so many congressman, senators and state representatives are well over 50 years of age themselves you think they would recognize the problem and do something about it. We can find no evidence to indicate that is happening,  Perhaps they would understand the situation if a law was instituted that you can no longer run for public office after age 49. We believe then,   that would be a stimulus to get something to happen.

Many companies are rushing to accept stimulus dollars, Westborough, MA based battery manufacturer  Boston Power   , a case in point suggesting that they will open a new manufacturing plant in Auburn, MA that will eventually employ some 600 people in a few years. On the MA Department of Unemployment job site – they list jobs and are designated as taking Stimulus money. Why can’t there   be stipulations that these jobs go to qualified people 50 and older- they did take the stimulus money to fund them.

If some need some specialized training these employers are already eligible to get workforce training money in the Work Force Initiative Act (WIA). There is Stimulus money to work on your GED or Reading skills, but it is the well educated with BS and Masters Degrees that are finding it most difficult to get  redeployed. Many are working for minimum wage for temp agencies.

Some states choose not to accept additional stimulus money for extended unemployment benefits (like Virginia),  as apparently a large part of their constituents felt that either business did not want the incremental tax burden or it caused people to not look for work.  That is folly, especially the well trained 50 year old’s – they have no desire to dally on unemployment they are hardworking American’s who what to support their families.

So we ask you Congressmen, senators, and state representative why not look at a plan like this?  We would love to hear what you have to say on the subject. We are ready to work for this how about you? Remember if your not 50 you will be someday and sooner than you think.
