In a previous article I revealed one million jobs that you could apply for no matter where you live in the United States. Let’s assume that everyone else has already taken that low hanging fruit but you still find yourself unemployed. Let’s approach an online internet search for jobs from a slightly different direction and see if we can find a million new jobs that you can apply for.

The way we found one million jobs before was to find a word or two that encompasses a lot of jobs. We also considered positions that have been with civilization since the dawn of the industrial revolution—namely sales and management.    In addition, we considered what jobs are seasonally abundant.

This time let’s use a different rationale in order to get at a different slice of the job pie.  One of the words that comes up most frequently in job searches is “therapist.”   The problem with this type of job is that depending on what kind of therapist we are talking about, years of study and experience could be involved.  So although “therapist” brings up over 200,000 jobs, we will set it aside.

If you are out of work because your existing field needs fewer people or because your existing skills are no longer needed in the US labor market then it is likely you will need a new field.  Since you will be new to that field you need to concentrate on levels appropriate to newcomers.  A newcomer is often used as a helpmate.   A combining word that can mean helper or assistant is the word “support.”    When I put the word “support” into the search engine at www.Indeed.com with no filters, I get over 700,000 jobs.  The problem is that support jobs are in every field imaginable from technical to family counseling to part time sales.  One way to narrow down this field is look on the left hand side of the search engine at the job titles.  Click on any title you might be interested in.  For instance, sales, cashier, and UPS driver may appear.

One of the ways to break into a new field is to become an assistant.   The job search engine Indeed shows over 200,000 assistant jobs.   A lot of these jobs might be more accepting of new people than some of the jobs we saw under “therapist” or even “supporter.”

Using the job search engine Indeed, if you look under the Find Jobs button you will see a hyperlink that says “Advanced Job search.”   Click on it.  In box that says  “At least one of these words”  type “entry beginner trainee.”   Only about 100,000 jobs show up which might mean that low or no skilled jobs have already been drained from the economy.  For these jobs I would say get them while they are hot.  It would seem there will be fewer of them tomorrow.

It turns out that there are a lot of people who need “help” out there.  The following search renders over 400,000 jobs on Indeed.  “(help or desk or junior)”.  Some jobs like bank teller and KFC assistant manager come up with this search.

The term “data” yields over 300,000 jobs.  Data entry will be a big field for the remainder of our life times.  Someone has to initially get all the information we deal with into the computer.

And finally the phrase “intern or student” turns up over 100,000 jobs.  Which again shows that the first rung of the career ladder seems to be disappearing in some areas so now is the time to take advantage of it.
