Many of Americans have suddenly found themselves without a job as more and more companies are closing their doors or just trimming down the payroll expenses. Panic and despair are often the first and strongest emotions these jobless people feel and express, for the first time in their lives they are waking up in the morning not sure what they should do. How are they going to pay their bills and how they are going to find a new job in an almost jobless economy are questions that constantly plague them. But, the loss of one job can open the door to endless possibilities for another.

It’s been a really long time since things in the United States have been this tough, all you have to do is watch the news and everyday unemployment and company shut downs are the headliners.  Every neighborhood is filled with vacant houses or for sale signs because people can no longer afford to pay their mortgage or their bills and the president has asked people to live within their means.  If you find yourself among the millions of Americans who have gotten the pink slip, don’t despair.  Instead this can be a great opportunity for you, especially if you really did not like the job you just lost.  This could be the opportunity for you to do something you really love, something you have always wanted to do, but never had the time.  If nothing else, unemployment does give you the time you never had, but always wished you had.  Take this valuable time to think about the things you love to do and which careers can utilize them the best.

If you are going to choose a new career you may also want to consider if there is a demand for people in that field.  Many times people choose a career, get educated and then when they are finally done with the education process they realize that no one is in need or hiring in the profession they have chosen and end up working as a sales clerk with a bachelors degree.  Don’t let that happen to you, make sure after all that hard work your new skills will be in need for some lucky company.

Education is very important and needed for most of the great jobs in demand these days so while you are looking for a job on unemployment take this time to further your education.  Many states are offering aid in education for the unemployed so take advantage of it.  Apply for scholarships and as much aid as you can possibly get then go to school and get educated for a job you will love.  Go to your states official website and look around for links in grants for education.

The internet is quickly becoming a great place to make some extra money or start a work at home job.  There are tons of ways to make some money on the internet, you can write articles, start a web site, or freelance as a photographer or graphic designer.  Information on the internet is abundant and easily found for free if you need some help with building that web site, About.com offers lots of free online classes you can take anytime.  It is possible to make an honest living at home in front of your computer if that is what you really want to do.

Unemployment time can also be a great time to start a business, just make sure that the business you are going to start is something people will need.  More and more people are going back to the basics and they are not spending money on frivolous things or luxury items so you definitely have to keep that in mind when choosing a business to start.  You can do all the ground work like figuring out your business plan, expenses, research and paperwork while on unemployment so that by the time your unemployment runs out you will be ready to open the doors for your new business, maybe you can even get all your ducks in a row fast enough so you don’t have to wait for your unemployment to run out.

Another great thing about unemployment is that you finally have the time to get all the stuff around the house done that you have not have time for.  You now have the time to clean out your closets, paint the house and organize your junk drawers.  A clean and organized environment will help you feel better which will also help you to succeed.
