Want Better Staff: Treat Your Employees Like Dogs
You might think this notion is appalling, but from where I sit it occurs to me that many employees are often treated worse than their bosses dog, or at least they feel like they are.
Praise
Praise is important in dogs as well as employees, think of how many times you say to your dog “good dog”. Even if your dog only hears “good dog” once a day, or once a week, that is more than some employees hear it ever. Praise makes nearly everyone feel better about themselves and the job they are doing. It reinforces the notion that they are valuable and when people feel they are valued they work harder. Some employers feel no need to offer praise since they themselves may not hear it, nonetheless if they are able to praise their dog, they can praise their employees.

Attention
We always give attention to our dogs, we notice when they need to go out, we pat them when they are near. Some people are heard to say to their dog “Hey boy, how are you doing?” They take note if their dog is not doing well and act accordingly, hopefully taking the dog to the vet. Few employers care about their staff on a human level and seldom take the time to pay attention to those they feel are below them. Employers will even demand employees leave their home life at home, creating a very impersonal, and cold working environment. Would it really damage business if an employer were to ask their employee how they are doing and actually give a damn about the answer? We do it for our dogs all the time.

Treats
Dog owners throw their dogs a bone every now and again, they offer treats, often without reason, goodies given “just because”. Sadly in the work world people have to earn a bonus and treats are not given out without reason. Employers should take note and give out random treats to their employees for no other reason than being loyal, just like our beloved canine companions.

Great Information about dogs
This great article should be in every town’s newspaper. Maybe the employers in that town would stand up and take notice. I will be showing this article to my family. This article should be looked upon as much food for thought. Admire your accurate creative writing style. Always interesting and informative. More than just excellent.

useful article
Nice article Brenda. When a boss knows how to treat his employees well, there is no problem. Many don’t understand the significance of treating well.
Awesome article!!! Love the correlation with puppies and employees. Loved dogs have a wonderful life, so being treated at work, by the principles you mentioned, would create for better work environments.
nice share.
Good article but I think it would only ever happen in Utopia.:)
Nice piece. But employees deserve better treatments than dogs!
Cool,Nice dogs in the picture.
This is one heck of a good article B!
If I were still working my last job, I would print this out and mail it to my former boss who treated most of us like you know what on the ground! A very good write and I wish a lot of people will read this. Very good comparison and I so enjoy your writing!
Great idea – very clever comparison.
I love this article. I am going to pass this link on to one or two people who could reall use your advice!
Really good one!
One of the many things I can say for my old boss is she was very good about giving treats and often gave encouragement. I am posting this to my facebook, and hopefully my friends will email it to their bosses.
well written
amazing
I wonder what would happen in a work environment if we used those same principles on the boss; If we took the time to find reason to praise him, if we \”treated\” him, if we complimented him in the area of his strength of skill. If we didn\’t merely complain around the water cooler but devised method and actions together to increase the bosses awareness and empathy. If we constantly used teamwork terminology around him until he actually believed. What would happen to the work environment then?
Well…be happy if you are treated similar to that of a dog…..try to imagine an employer who treats even his dog better than his employers.
Feeling better?
Personally I think Neutering your employees would greatly improve productivity. and if not you can always put them to sleep.
if i follow your advice & treat my employees as shown in the photos, my wife will definitely kill me
anyway.. it’s a nice article.
