Cross-Cultural Communication
How and in what ways do cultures communicate differently? Does it make a difference in the workplace? What are ways in which possible situations can be ameliorated?
We established “that culture constitute that which makes up our way of life, these include our shared values, knowledge, behavior, and expressing of symbolism” ( Dobkins, B. and Pace, R. 2003 p. 44). How then and in what way do cultures communicate differently? Does it make a difference in the workplace? What are ways in which possible situations can be ameliorated?
Because the work force is comprised of such a diverse group of individual’s communication can be a complex issue. According to article entitled “diversity in the workplace” (Lopez-Rocha, S. 2007), Management and those in leadership’s positions deal with conflicts in communication on a daily basis. Most of these issues are centered on those different styles in communication. A conscious effort to establish rapport among subordinates and co-workers has to be a continuous effort. Culture awareness of others values and attitudes enhances support and understanding of complicated issues.
One of the key ingredients in the improvement of relationships in the workplace is culture awareness. When these modes of entry are established we are able to increase productivity, and improve organizational procedures. Individuals who lack insight are prone to training. Training in issues of diversity gives a sense of understanding of cultural situations and enhances knowledge for those in position to endure those issues of a multi-cultural work force (2007). Cultural understanding is an on going endeavor. Until we learn the importance of these issues, we will remain lacking in the area of communication.
In short, Communication is a complex issue. Discrepancies centered on individual’s differences in cultural groups can cause conflict between management and employees. Barriers in cultural situation contribute to stereotypes and prejudices in a diverse workplace. The best interest of all parties’ involved is to remain knowledgeable in those issues of cultural communication.
