With all the developments happening in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom is also aware of environmental concerns especially about the dangers caused by industrial wastes – both toxic and non-toxic. The large industrial companies of the country have put in place some world class measures to manage wastes, recycle them or dump them into a harmless way.
The Saudi Aramco’s Industrial Waste Management Plan is considered as one of the best in the world. The plan received international recognition, provides for the special industrial waste management needs of each of the company’s operating plants. As reported the company utilizes several environmentally acceptable methods for treating industrial waste. In the Kingdom, sanitary landfills are used for the disposal of municipal solid wastes, while industrial wastes are segregated and handled according to their hazard risk following approved industry practices.
Saudi Aramco has constructed several industrial waste treatment plants which include separators to treat oily water, land-farms to treat oily sludge, dedicated asbestos disposal areas and on site oxidation of pyrophoric waste. Also Saudi Aramco has a Waste Minimization Program that reduces waste generation and lowers associated costs. This includes installation of flare gas compressors to recover gases, use of the flue-gas oxygen analyzers to optimize fuel consumption and to minimize emissions and off-site regeneration of valuable catalyst. Saudi Aramco is the first company in the Kingdom to organize and initiate a recycling program.
Aside from Saudi Aramco another Saudi giant the Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) suggests the best practices in the disposal of industrial waste. The company is strongly committed to conducting its business in an environment friendly manner and with the highest regard to the protection of air, water and land resources. The company adopts what is known the 4R strategy to further improve their waste management performance.
The four Rs are Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. The significant benefits from the 4R program of SABIC are reduction in environmental impact, resource conservation, reduced disposal cost and financial benefits from reuse, recycle and recovered material. As reported, SABIC facilities successfully achieved reduction in the generation of the waste through improved collection techniques, segregation and process modifications.
