McDonald’s and Jollibee: A Visual Battle for Market Supremacy
McDonald’s is undoubtedly the undisputed market leader in the world in terms of market share. In the Philippine setting though, a local food chain known as Jollibee has taken over the reign of McDonald’s. How did Jolibee do it?
From a consumer point of view, it would seem that the battle was won by Jollibee through a simple but effective visual product and image presentation. Of course, the taste of Jollibee’s product lines played a pivotal role in its successful battle for market supremacy over McDonald’s. Marketing practitioners are one in saying that Jolibee was successful in formulating its products to suit the particular taste of the Filipino consumer.
As a typical consumer and a marketing practitioner, here are some of my comments and observations on the visual presentation of these two competing fast food chains. I encourage my readers to present their own views or personal comments.
Logo

McDonald’s logo has not changed much since it was created by Jim Schindler in 1962 from the idea of Dick and Mac McDonald. This arch-shaped logo, a merger of two golden arch images with McDonald’s name incorporated in the image, became very famous not only in America but the world over.
The Jollibee logo on the other hand was inspired by the changes in its original name “jolibe” to Jolly Bee and then later changed it to what is now known as Jollibee by changing the letter “y” to “i” in the word Jolly. Improvements were made later by creative advertising people including the design of the Mascots and other Jollibee images. These simple brand image innovations were inspired by Manuel C. Lumba, a management consultant who served as the original mentor of Tony Tan Caktiong , the majority owner and founder of the now-famous Jollibee food chain.
In the above visual presentation, it appears that the Jollibee logo is stands out because it tends to present an active, fun and jolly image while McDonald’s logo seems to look just like a corporate image that identifies its existence as a leader in the food business.
Mascots

Mascots, in this article, may be referred to as fictional images of persons or animals that are used to promote certain products or services.
In the above images, my personal impression is that the McDonald mascot has the edge in terms of “recall” that it can generate. The main McDonald mascot, popularly known as Ronald McDonald, is presented as a happy and accommodating mascot, always smiling and his hands waving always at customers or anyone passing by the store. Though the Jollibee Mascot is a happy-looking image, it is not presented as a friendly and accommodating as projected by the McDonald’s Mascot
Store Fronts

Store Designs and Images are very important part of the total marketing mix. In this category, it seems that Jollibee has the edge. In the Philippines, Jollibee Stores or outlets are well lighted and the exterior signage is placed prominently on top of the main entrance. These store signs when lighted serve as additional source of lightings and illumination.
Signage

Signage is very important in enticing customers to visit the outlet. The store signs of these two competing brands are very well designed and executed. However I will favor McDonald’s main store sign because of two distinct qualities; First and foremost is the yellow color of the McDonald logo. Yellow color is neither a “stop” nor a “go” if you relate it to traffic lights. And when you are driving in the vicinity of the store, you are actually slowing down as if you are approaching a traffic light that changes from green to yellow and ultimately to red where you are expected to stop. When you are driving on a “yellow”, it would therefore be easy for you to drive in to the McDonald outlet.
The other attraction of the McDonald’s signage is the big “M”, which is actually an image of two arches joined together. From a distance, the yellow arch is very visible especially if you are driving in a highway where you pass by a McDonald outlet.
There are other visual materials that are being used by both companies in promoting their products but the major or dominant signage that are featured in this article will determine each company’s strength and weaknesses in terms of generating revenues through the proper and appropriate use of visual images.
My comments and observations on the images contained in this article are based on my personal observations and not intended to take sides or favor any of the competing brands.

It appears, Jollibee is getting much the better of McDonalds in the Philippines.
Mcdonalds dominates the international fastfood industry, but the Philippines is the only country where they only settle to second place.
Nice article, Leo. Pa-cheeseburger ka naman! :=)
Is Jollibee just a Philipines chain?
Very interesting subject here. I often wonder why McDonalds stays at the top. Their food (in my opinion) is not very good. The hamburger patty is processed (?)! Whereas many other chains have real beef. This I guess ties in to your article because the above opinion leads me to think it has to be two factors that keep McDonalds on top—- marketing and universal recognition. Those big yellow M’s are universally recognized by any traveler. When someone is off in a different city often they just don’t feel like trying the local flavor or local chains. Then there is Marketing…. McDonalds cunningly targets teenagers and young kids in their ad’s with great success. Think about how many three year olds say “I want madonalds.” Now how many are begging for a Steak and Shake?
I agree with jo oliver…my opinion mcdonalds food isn’t very good. Alot of other people like it though. Their cheese kind of does taste like rubber. Their hamburgers taste like processed meat but back in Vernal, UT the wrappers say it is real. So I’m not so sure about that. Just thought I would share some.
This was very interesting. I never imagined that McDonald’s wouldn’t be in first place. I’ve always thought that some of the other local USA fast foods like Chick Fillet and Wendy’s have better tasting food. Jollibee does have an enticing logo and mascot. It would be interesting to see how they would do here.
I am glad someone is around to dethrone McDonalds. In fact, I agree with Jo and Angrified, I never eat at McDonalds due to the fact these use Trans Fats to cook their foods which is enough to cause heart attacks and heart disease in most of the people that eat there. Pretty soon, Transfats will be banned and McDonalds will have to do a complete face lift.
Here in the Philippines Jollibee has more costumers compare to Mc Do. Pinoy kasi ang approach ng mga pagkain sa Bubuyog kumpara sa may matulis na sapatos, hehe. Nice article,Leo.
Thank you all for your comments. The article did not touch on the taste or quality of their products. Some consumers like the traste of McDonald’s products, others prefer Jollibee, for different reasons. The focus of the article is more on the visual(signage)as an effective tool in driving traffic to their stores.
Please don’t ask me which one is my favorite.
Verniel, I can spare you one cheeseburger but you have to
to tell us which one do you like, McDo or Jollibee and
why.
Jo, for your information, Jollibee is now going International. They are now in different Asian countries including HongKong and mainland China. Jollibee is doing great in California and other cities in the USA. I think they are opening more branches/franchises in many parts of the USA in the next few years.
Thanks Leo. I am not up on international food and since I live in Mississippi, I am sure we will be the last to get any new food chains.
The Jollibee logo has great appeal to kids. My daughter’s attention was glued to a Jollibee sign when she first saw it before she turned 1. Ever since, she would scream whenever she sees it. Now that she’s turning 2, and have a more sophisticated way of showing her pleasure, she would wave and say Hi whenever she sees a Jollibee mascot or store, and would wave Bye when it recedes from her view, as what happens when we are in a moving car. I don’t know what makes the logo appeal to kids, maybe it’s the smile, or maybe the color, but what I’m quite sure is that McDonalds logo does not attract that much euphoria in kids.
As anyone in the food marketing business will know, you need to appeal to the kids, because when the kids tell you where they want to eat, they most often prevail.
basta ako pag nagutom kahit ano/saan pa yn kakain ako.. (=
Where in the world is Ronald Mcdonald?
I’ve heard he is just to old to smile and wave
his hand. He is probably just sitting in a stretcher,
thinking he cant take off his make up coz after all the
years of wearing it his face looks horrible without it.
Personally, I dont like him. He reminds
me of that killer clown in the movie,”IT.”
While Jollybee in the other hand, has his own
local show Jollytown. And regardless to how long
he remains to be the mascot, anyone can put on
that suit.
i think jollibee was an effective one.from its stores around the globe, including also their crews(jollibee crew).very accomudating. once i visit mcdo.i noticed that they just ignored the request of two customers because they knew that the two customer were a jolilibee employee.
I have 1 thing i observed when Jollibee competes with Mcdonald…masyadong unfair…last time nagopen ang Mcdonald’s sa lugar namin and i am one of the customer at Mcdonalds..Nagmotorcade din ang Jollibee without any occassion after nagmotorcade ang Mcdonald’s..And nabastusan talaga ako nung tinapunan ng Jollibee ng maraming Jollibee coupons ang mga customer ng Mcdonald’s….But I agree mas masarap sa Jollibee…
very informative article… this can actually help me in my case study… it seems that jollibee has an upper hand in the Philippine market… but it will be interesting to see how it compares with McDonalds in the latter’s turf (US market).
