Seeking Job at South Star Drug
South Star drug as one of the leading drugstores in the Philippines seems promising. Their demands for employees are never satisfied. SSD branches continue to spread all over the country, but there is a secret.

South Star drug is one of the most popular drugstores in the Philippines. Its chain grows each year, reaching very province and every city. They stand by their slogan “Mapagkakatiwalaang tunay” meaning, most trusted.
Besides providing the best medicine money can buy, SSD or South Star drug also prioritize in customer satisfaction. Like any other business, they value their customers’ needs and interests.
South star drug stability and popularity can be very attractive. You may be interested for applying for a job. But let me rephrase an important statement above, “They value every customer’s needs and interests”.

Applying for a job is money and time consuming. Before leaving any bio-data or other credentials to any SSD branch, feel free to check out the following:
Application Standards
If you are already married or single but over thirty years old and you are applying as a pharmacy aid forget it. They will only hire you if you are a registered pharmacist.
There are three sets of examinations: English, Math and Logic. If they do not like you and if you are not a pharmacist, they may flunk you. They do not show the test results as a policy, so you will never know if you really failed the test.
Getting through the series of examinations, you will be required to submit more documents that would mean more investment of time and money. You will be interviewed and oriented as a final step of your employment. Of course, there will be handsome promises of compensations. Trust me, you will find yourself grinning with these.
Harsh Policies
You may expect strict rules and regulations from an established institution like South Star Drug. How can a business flourish if it would have some friendly policies? I’ve listed some grounds considering unacceptable habits within the drugstore.
- Tardiness
A total of fifteen minutes late within a fifteen working days will result into a memo. If the employee commits the same offence he will be suspended from work.
- Absences
Emergency absences should be notified to the office within one hour before the employee’s job schedule. An unexcused absence will cost a memo from the management.
- Short/ Over
This applies to the cashier. Any money lacking or excess shall be paid by the person in charge of the cash register. While a ‘short’ would mean that he had been careless in giving change, an ‘over’ would mean that he didn’t register an item that had been sold.

- Customer service
You must always present that wholesome face of yours. You are obliged to greet the customer good morning or good evening all over again, one customer to the next. When you receive a payment, you must speak its value to the customer. You must always be friendly if not; you can be reported to the management for being direct. Any noncompliance with these will mean memos and worst, suspension.
More?
- The founders of SSD are Bicolanos. There’s a main office in Manila, but the mother base is in Naga city.
- SSD has many bosses. Get use to the addresses ‘ma’am’ and ‘sir’.
- They tend to give seminars from time to time usually in the main offices. There’s a transportation allowance but you’ll have to pay for your food.
- All employees are on probation and will be observed by the OIC.
- Missing and expired medicine will be paid by the drugstore employees.
- There’s the usual monthly inventory, weekly orders and deliveries. But did I mention that the number of employees in a drugstore depends on its sale? If a store’s income is above fifty thousand, it is entitled for five people including the OIC. The drugstore operates for seven days a week and each employee has a day off. This means that if one employee is off, the four remaining employee will take turns in running the drugstore. A bit short to handle customers, don’t you think? The four employees will end up in partners- a cashier and a pharmacy aid. Imagine doing the order, inventory and receiving the delivery while attending to the customers with only two staffs.
Image via Wikipedia
- Freebies and promos for the customers mean more paperwork and obligations.
- Medicine incentives are good news for drugstore employees.
- They give additional pay for holidays and they do not close during Christmas and Lenten season.
- They give Christmas parties and outings. Trust me, you won’t enjoy them.
- Product prices are monitored through the Net. They don’t tag prices for reasons that product costs tend to change each day.
- Most SSD drugstores do not have generators for brown outs.
- Although sales reports and other statements are delivered through the Net, hard copies are shifted trough weekly deliveries.
- There’s always a re-shuffle. Any drugstore staff is obliged to transfer from one drugstore to another.
- You may discover that promotions in SSD are very fast. For starter you are only a merchandiser then you are going to be a merchandiser-pharmacy aide then merchandiser-PA-manager. Pharmacists are the most pitiful. When they get promoted, they become the pharmacist- manager-janitor. If you are a pharmacist, please… do not take the promotion. They can be very persuasive but say NO. But if you would want to live in your assigned drugstore, take the job.
FINAL WORDS
Working for SSD can be dismaying. This is the main reason why employees don’t last long. The management doesn’t care much for their drugstore staffs.
As a consolation, SSD offers the best training back ground for any employee. If you would want a stressful yet challenging job, do go on with your application with South Star drug. The best of luck my friend.

Interesting and detailed.
no comment. haha
The Truth Hurts…..
….(O\\\’,\\\’O)….shocking but truth.
really? so go to mercury drug hahahahahaha
i agree with stephen the author wrote it in detailed ah.. but not interesting coz if it is true hmmnn there’s something WRONG with the management!!!
You have a point and i am commending you for that brave and fearless views about your employer. Im just concern because i came from Bicol too and South Star Drug Inc. originated in here.
Let me site also some points in favor of the management, The work inside a retail drugstore, supermarket and even department store is not for the weak-kneed and weak-minded.
In this type of work you are usually entrusted with property that is worth a million pesos, and operations of a business requires a great customer service. In some company the employees voluntarily shares the burden of paying the loss, they do this as act of accountability without prodding the top management.
Working indside the store involves manual labor, the lifting and moving of products, cleaning and dusting, washing and sweeping, you are in a service organization.
Employees who do not enjoy serving other people have no place in this type of job.
Take this words of advice : You can keep your heads above water through the possesion of certain charater traits.
What you cited above, are pure chracter assasination. Did you you as an employee done your part too?
I met some of the employees of SSD and I find them not very attractive…madami pang panget kaysa sa magaganda..hahaha..
For the author, I know you base this from your own opinion and experiences you have with SSD. Its not a good thing though but I know you just want to make a point. I’m sure that this is not just your own opinion and thoughts, its also base from the experiences of your co-worker in SSD.
For the management, now you know what the feelings of your employees. We know that a certain company need to have a rules and regulations to follow in order for the business to florish, but sometimes a company should also check if this rules and regulations are both beneficial to the employees and to the management. If not, I believe some revision must be made.
The issue is not about an employee/s who hates the management of SSD. or the lack of management of the SSD. The issue is about COMMUNICATION. I suggest that the management needs to be more transparent and open to their employees. This will not happened if this kind of issue was resolved internally. A suggestion/comments box is a big help.
Thanks!!!

The image of one company sometimes depend more to the HR team. I suggest SSD should find better person to handle with this department. He/She should be aware for every employee needs and should be fair for every action they want to implement. Don’t be crab mentality just to be good looking from the top management. In short don’t be SIPSIP!
Thank you and good luck.
Thank you author. This is a great help for us job seekers. So BAKYA nga naman pala ng South Star. I’ve heard many stories about SSD. Ganyan nga naman pala. Kaya nga naman pala laging me hiring kasi wala talagang nagtatagal silang mga tauhan. Hahahaha!
PS
I am a Pharmacist, newly grad in need of work
I wonder: The country does not regulate the duties and rights of the employer and employees? seems to me that there should begin to solve the problem.
I would say that this article is more of a pure character assasination. Those who commented and agreed that there’s really irregularities in the policies that SSD has try to calm down and read these. Though some were a little bit true, but most of the pocieis discussed were exaggerated as I was able to talk to some of the employees of SSD coz there’s one near my place. I got so interested of what were discussed so I tried to spy a bit with some of them. Alas, I knew it was really 100% NOT true but more of the author is trying to ruin the reputation of the company. No one is at fault even HR has nothing to do with it. It’s not that being SIPSIP would greatly deal with this kind of situation, be with the company fot\r you to know. The best way for you to know is to discover it by your self. Try to look at your self in the mirror and ask your self if you have done something good for your company as well. try to have your own business since I have one so I was able to encounter situations cited. Its sad that employees are looking for their own benefits but not showing concern over the business. Before you speak out of anything stop look and listen. Obviously look at your self. South Star Drug would not grow that big if they will just give attentions to this kind of negative publicity. For the newly grad pharmacist who commendted in here, better for you to be in South Star Drug for you to be good and very versatile. You could be promoted as stated to Pharmacist-Manager-Janitor, meaning you could learn to clean your own mess. Wala ka pa ngang napapatunayan well. Earn and earn more then establish your own for you to see the difference. I, being a businessman would say, “sayang at may mga pinagaralan kayo para maniwala kayo sa mga sinasabi rito ng hindi nyo pa napaptunayan”. I would rather go to a company that there’s backbone like South Star Drug and could face anyone, that to a company that trying to project that they are good but they are not.” Good luck to all believers…
@ watsons
i’vw worked for the company at masasabi ko na totoo lahat ng nakasaad dito sa article. wag mo na ipagtanggol. loka ka!
Very well said Watsons! I agree to you…
As the writer of this article. I guess I have to say something. I really don’t think that this is a character assassination, because I didn’t mention any names.
And don’t worry friend. With the job shortage here in the Phil? I don’t think that you won’t have any trouble with applicants seeking job at your company. Why do you think I posted this? Man. This is the net and people needs information. Your company wouldn’t post the negative side of things right? I am just doing you a favor so that people who would work from you will accept your company as it is.
My sources are from very reliable people…. those that had worked and those that are planning to leave SSD.
Newly grad, Watsons has a good point. SSD is a good place to start. Specially if you would want to start a drugstore of your own. The managerial and janitor trainings are excellent. It is also an advantage that you can have a work certificate with them. Other drugstore companies will admire you for it because they will know that you came from a very disciplinary company. Just try to stay for 6 months if you can
Dhenis is also correct, SSD is not for the weak-knee and the weak-minded.
Oh yeah! I feel that there are still some things that I didn’t mention- the health benefits, the bond and about the salary. I am thinking to post another article concerning SSD but I guess this will be enough.
THORNY ROSE
AS A SENIOR PHARMACIST WALANG MASAMA KUNG MAGING ALL AROUND KA SA WORK MO,YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF THAT KASE NDE NAMAN NAKABAWAS NG PAGKATAO MO KUNG MAG JANITOR K OR LAHAT NG WORK AY MAGAWA MO PARA MAKATULONG KA SA COMPANY AT SA KASAMA MO SA WORK.LAHAT NG POLICY NG COMPANY AY PARA SA INYO RIN TO MAKE U A BETTER PERSON KASE SA WORK NDE LANG WORK AS A PHARMACIST,CASHIER ANG MATUTUNAN MO BUT INDEED IT WOULD MAKE U BETTER PERSON SPECIALLY KUNG MARUNONG KA HUMARAP AT MAKINIG SA KAPWA MO GROW UP BE BROAD MINDED IM SURE MAG ENJOY K MAG SERVE SA KAPWA MO.LEARN TO RELAX WHEN UR TIRED AND WEARY.ABOVE ALL SEEK GODS GUIDANCE.DONT MIX UR EMOTION TO UR JOB.BE PROFESSIONAL
Thank you for coming back. I’m sorry to hear that from you. I’m sure other Pharmacists have different ideas. These professionals studied for four years and their family paid large sums of money for their education. I am confident that they have the respect for themselves and the dignity not to be a slave for any company.
There are other drugstore companies that treat Pharmacists as professionals though. These includes Mercury drug, TGP etc.
Lipat ka na. Kawawa ka naman
GODBLESS!
well, its just an unprofessional job if the SSD kung walang pakialam ang management sa mga employee nagpatakbo kapa ng business., if you does care with your employee how they well work good if you as a SSD manager could not show the care and polite with your employee.. ahh gudluck pipols,..
About the policies, isn’t it the responsibility of the employee to come on time anyway? Receiving a memo for being late is not harsh, especially if you’ve been late for a number of times. Lahat ng binanggit mo sa “harsh” policies, they’re all part of an employee’s responsibilities to his/her employer.
Hindi ko nagets yung article mo. In the beginning, it’s as if you’re so proud to have worked in it. Pero sa dulo, ang dating nga sinisiraan mo na. I don’t blame you, though, you probably had a bad employment experience in SSD overall. Pero hindi ba ganun naman sa trabaho? Iba-iba yan sa iba’t ibang tao. I’ve met some employees from SSD who have been working there for more than 30 years. Yung 1 nga dun, she started from the bottom, like everyone else. Naging patient lang sya, and nireward naman sya ng SSD, so now she’s been working for a long time as one of the higher ups.
Interesting article. And I found some comments rather funny. Cool lang kayo, the author is just expressing his opinion.
well, dear author, hindi mo pa nasabi lahat. search mo rin yung about sa position allowance starting from the stock analysts oic to the higher ups. pati yun pinapakialaman pa nila. what a heck!!!!!
I would like to comment on this published article. I find this article a bad publicity and therefore should not be given special attention by readers who happened to come across this site. Only no brainer folks would support and believe this.
Geomorphosis might have misconstrued or misinterpreted policies widely practiced and observed among companies. Understanding and acceptance are not present at all as the ideas conveyed are pure antagonism and skeptism on the author’s side. Getting this far is another story too. Author’s sole purpose here is to destroy the image and reputation of a company such as SSD, the company I would assume instrumental to author’s employment for survival at this time.
Whoever reads this article, once again, let us not be duped by this one. For employers, this is an eye opener for you to watch out for this kind of persona in your organization.
Thoughts to ponder: “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others do unto you”
hi wisdom, congrats! pagtanggol mo pa HRD ka ng SSD dvahhhhhh????
Thanks for posting your thoughts visitors. Not at all sabotage Mr. Wisdom. I did mention their good side, didn’t I? This article is solely for information. Many applicants had been misled by SSD, I am just giving them an overview from inside the company.
I have many friends in SSD. Maybe another reason why I wrote this article is for the company to change some of their policies. I admit the policy about being late is acceptable but the others are not fair. Companies become successful because of the help of their employees. They should treat each and everyone justly.
Miss Meztiza, I think this article is just enough for everyone to know about SSD. You can post your experiences though. Let this be an eye opener for those abusive managements.
And Mr wisdom again. I assure you, kung mag aaply ako sa SSD magkakandarapa sila sa akin. For your thoughts to ponder, I can tell myself that I am a noble person. My conscience is clean. I am just telling the real thing.
You are so cute! Hey, to set the record straight, I am not defending any department concerned here as you have implied. I only speak, stand and fight for what I believe is right and fair!
From an outsider’s point of view, a blatant attack from the author is just not right, it is unforgivable!
Be more vigilant and sensible folks!
what’s fair and right anyways with SSD? outsider’s point of views or a SIPSIP HRD insider?
Geomorphosis, I am just curious. What pushed you to open a site specifically for SSD? I am a bit confused, I couldn’t reconcile the logic here. A noble person would not engage into this negative publicity unless he himself has personal grudges and in return would like to get even to a person or company. Influence from friends inside the company? I think not enough reason for you to do this. Solely for information? Partly, but the content is more of assassinating the company. Your access to internal information is seemingly handy as you knew too much. I have a strong hunch that you are not doing this for your friends, but rather, for your best interest together with your cohorts inside the company. Gotcha! I guess you are still very much employed w/ SSD!!!
If you would want SSD to change their unfair policies, you could have written their management instead of publicly exposing it in the net. This is the work of art of one who is such a big and lousy loser!
You speak highly of yourself, you are too good to be true, Pare! If you would apply at SSD, I think they would not hire the likes of you. I don’t think magkandarapa sila sa iyo. For obvious reasons, you are worthless. If I were part of HR of another company, I would do the same too. Who would hire a double-faced person like you, anyway? I am not sorry for being blunt here. My conscience is clean and I am telling the truth. I swear to God!
To those who participated in here, please do not support the advocacy of the author. Your issues and concerns should go to the right person in your company. Be courageous in airing your concerns the right way to proper authorities. Office politics is inevitable anywhere you go, however, you can prevent it by doing the most sensible things. Succumbing to author’s trap will not do you any good.
Open your eyes folks! Act,move & think wisely!
Sure folks act, move and think wisely. Job seekers I hope this article was a good help to all of you. But, do take the chance. Ano ba nga naman ang mawawala- time? effort? money? dignity?
Honestly, kung magtatanong kayo sa mga presently employed, they will just smile or wouldn’t say anything about this because isa yun sa mga bawal.
Basta po, you heard it first here. Good luck po.
please go to CCF every sunday to clear your hearts and minds…
hay!for me…im just thankful na may nglakas ng loob to air side bout their grudges…yap, politics are strong even in a company where once trying to promote “the oneness as a FAMILY’. There is a truth bout 30 years that are still in the company but the reason why they’re still there?hmm…author its for you to found out….enjoy life!!!! outside if you have a choice!!!
Geomorphosis, you know what? They would have a name for you if we were still kids – sore loser. Since you’re not a child anymore (or I could be mistaken), you’re just plain immature. Grow up and learn how to deal with your issues like a real adult. Also, the next time you contrive to write an article, write one that doesn’t abound in fallacies because this article is overflowing with them.
Of course, employees that are to be hired shouldn’t be subpar. That’s exactly what the screening is for.
For your so-called harsh policies, I very much do not concur with the policies being harsh.
If you put yourself in an employer’s shoes, you wouldn’t want your employees to be late or absent without them notifying you, would you? Think about it. You say that some stores only have a few employees. What happens then if the office isn’t prompted about an employee’s absence?
If you were a customer, I bet you wouldn’t want unfriendly and rude employees attending to your needs. Now would you?
I can maybe understand if you wrote this because you’re an acrid employee/former employee but to say that you’re trying to voice out what your friends in the company are thinking /were thinking or merely trying to ‘enlighten’, I daresay you have some nerve and dubious intentions.
I really think those who read this article should be meticulous with this. There are a plethora of people in the world who try to unfairly raze other people’s reputations. Thus, we should do right by keeping an open eye.
This same guy keeps coming back to insult me. He uses different names but clearly he is from SSD. Boy! He could only be from SSD HR or one of the owner himself. And with his latest defensive comment…. He clearly admits that my research is really correct.
Decide for yourself friends
For what you have done, you truly deserve all the insults in the world Geomorphosis!
Stop playing dumb games, it is not getting you anywhere. After all these exchange of views, people has become more sensible.
The end condemns the means!
Lol! Pare aminin mo na- taga SSD ka. Kung passer by ka lang di ka na babalik. Di mo na pag aaksayahan ng oras ang article na to. What is South Star Drug to you?
So, you see folks they are so defensive about their company. But I leave you to your decision. Lalo na po ang mga propesyunal diyan. Masasayang lang po ang panahon nyo sa SSD.
PS
Stop using different names sir Wisdom. Your sentence construction is very obvious
And I guess, this Wisdom character is right. People may have become sensible. This day, my article has reached 1,567 page hits and still counting. Unbelievable how many people in the Philippines are interested in SSD.
Keep on posting, pare. Your comments say it all
Wisdom and Geomorphosis!
TUMIGIL NGA KAYO… ALAM NYO NAMAN KUNG SINO KAYO DIBA!!! ANG TOTOO KAYONG DALAWA ANG PROBLEMA NG COMPANY. MGA BAKLA!!!!!!! HAHAHA
YAN ANG HIRAP SA DALAWANG BAKLA!!! If i am the owner of the company. I gonna fire you both!!! bwesit!
im a previous employee and a lic pharmacist, and stand by what the author said. not that i am a person who hate on people, but what were written were all true. and also one must be carefull in buying there I’ve seen OIC from other branches that are not pharmacist erasing expiry dates on drugs and products to sell it again even though its expired. they were instructed to do so so they will not be charged. that’s why i left the company the policies are whack and the bosses are too focused on the money. job seekers needs to think twice before passing your CV here
hahaha…..no comment!!!!
Now You Know?????
SA MGA REKLAMADOR DIYAN… ALWAYS REMEMBER NA HINDI MULTIMILLONAIRE OR SUPER TO THE MAX MULTINATIONATIONAL CORPORATION ANG SOUTH STAR DRUG SO KUNG GUSTO NIO NG MAS MAGANDANG TRATO EH DI LUMIPAT KAYO NG MAS MAGANDANG COMPANY. “YOU CANNOT PLEASE EVERYBODY” AS IF NAMANG PERPEKTONG EMPLOYEES KAYO AT KUNG MAKACOMPLAIN KAYO EH PARANG NAPAKAUNJUST NG SSDI. WAKE UP PEOPLE YOUR NOT IN A FAIRY TALE WHERE ALL YOUR WISHES CAN COME TRUE! FEELING KAYO!
your so good lady gaga… everyone please face reality!
ang gulo nyo po lahat.. i know the intention of the author for publishing this is to give an overview of how it is to work at SSD. right? he/she may intends to help those who seeks for a job and his/her way is to give his/her opinions basing on the experience he/she had while working at SSD. what he/she said and those who agreed with him/her knows and justifies that they are right.
those who contradicts with the article, has also their own opinions. they maybe employees of SSD or they maybe friends with any employees of SSD or just some visitor like myself who wants to react at the above article. they are entitled to their own opinion. if they are employees of the said company, it is their right to defend the institution where they work. its not anybody’s fault that these people have enjoyed their stay and their working experience at SSD, its also the same with those who agrees with this article who are former employees of SSD, its not their fault as well that they unfortunately did not like their stay with the company.
the arguments based on this article would all be considered correct. the policies presented may or may not be true, but its actually on the person’s own point of view if it would be considerable or not.
every person has his own tolerance. if it’s stress that we are referring to, a person’s tolerance to stress may be different from another. a stimulus stressful to me may or may not be as stressful to you. its the same with what we are all arguing about here. WORKING IS AN EXPERIENCE. IT COULD BE A GOOD ONE OR THE OPPOSITE. BUT ONE CANNOT SAY THAT “MY EXPERIENCE WILL BE YOURS TOO”. COZ WE ARE ENTITLED TO DIFFERENT PATHS AND WE AS HUMANS FEEL AND THINK DIFFERENTLY. thank you and God bless
STOP COMMENT KASI OVER EXAGGERATED NA KASI HAHABA LANG ANG ARGUMENT AT WALA NAMANG MAGANDA IDUDULOT,WE HAVE DIFFERENT OPINION BUT FOR ME OK NAMAN MAG WORK SA SSD KASI MARAMI KANG MATUTUNAN AT MARAMI KA RIN MAKIKILALA,ESPECIALLY SA PHARMACIST OK NAMAN SILA SA BENIFITS AND ALLOWANCES.
you know people, wala talagang mangyayari kung dito ninyo ilalabas yung mga hinanakit ninyo.
am a reg ph and is still working with SSD. it’s true we are just but humans. kung ayaw nyo na sa SSD fine. siguro naman, in one way or the other , naging happy ka rin b4 wnhile working with my company. Ang sa akin lang naman, for as long as I am enjoying my work, ok lang. money don’t count much sa akin. Basta ba SSD management will continue to treat me as human being, I think tatagal pa ako dito.
Try to talk with the management itself at dun ka magsalita. I think naman they are that professional to listen to your demands, than exchanging words na kayo lang naman ang nagsasagutan. if ever na wala na kayo sa SSD, please leave us alone….

To all people just a piece of advice, if you are an asset or your doing your job well in a certain company for instance SSDI and you think and feel that you dont like anymore the policies, ofcmates, salary, benefits ETC.. just LEAVE and find another company that will suited for you, there’s a lot of big companies out there UNLESS you dont have CHOICE but to stay in your current company like SSDI, just as simple like that! “as the saying goes it’s their LOSS not yours”….
