This is a compilation of words that can help a leader to build or make a better organization. This compilation is taken from the IBM 2009 calendar.

1. Provoke

Now more than ever, leaders are hungry for change. And with this conviction comes the ability to carry out safe and smooth change management.

2. Astonish

Increasingly, meeting the demands of global customers requires leaders to innovate beyond traditional solutions and be the experts of what’s possible from a technology point of view. Leaders now have the capacity to turn information into business insight.

3. Defy

Leaders need new ways to navigate through more markets, more capabilities and more demands. They need flexible technology to get their hands on resources and information from every corner of our shrinking world. And they need organizational effectiveness to lead collaboration, innovation and opportunity.

4. Disrupt

Leaders are addressing growth strategy by removing obstacles to change in their business models. They’re turning radical thinking into groundbreaking solutions, and they’re doing it at a rapid pace to stay ahead of the competition.

5. Affect

Corporate values have changed for the better. So have business models, customer expectations and environmental results. Managers are leading by example on green initiatives, making decisions that are good for business and good for society.

6. Do

Leaders now want to stop talking and just start doing. They want to be the initiator of action and, therefore, change. They know that after change comes newness and better things. Great leaders understand that an organization ready for change is an organization ready for success.

7. Relate

When an organization creates meaningful relationships with its customers, it is able to address their needs better. After communication and cooperation comes connection. And leaders recognize that real understanding comes from true and deep insight.

8. Start

If a leader has the power to begin something, he can see it through. Beginnings are often challenging, but they are always important. It is the moment of creation, of transforming ideas into reality and concepts into concrete things. Great leaders start with a purpose, knowing which direction to take and which end goal to focus on.

9. Compete

Competition enhances the development of an industry. When every organization strives to be the best, progress and improvement are not far behind. Healthy competition is not only a challenge to increase quality, but is likewise an opportunity to share the work. A great leader understands that competition encourages respect, recognizes the performance of others and teaches people how to set and achieve realistic goals.

10. Accelerate

Technology develops at a great speed and great leaders know they must act fast so they won’t be left behind. However, organizations must keep up with technological development for the right reasons. And it is imperative to understand, too, that to get the most out of technology, you need to be a hundred percent sure that you are getting the right information from the right place.

11. Think

Everything begins with a thought. The mind, therefore, must be fertile enough for great thoughts to thrive. When a person thinks, he focuses, reflects, feels, considers, imagines and believes. When leaders think, they manipulate information mentally so they are able to form concepts, solve problems, reason, and make correct decisions. But when great leaders think, their thoughts manifest.

12. Change

If you are for change, you are for urgency, optimism and faith. When a leader decides to undergo change for the entire organization to stay competitive, innovative and effective, he or she is building momentum by enabling and empowering the whole group. The transformation, however, must be sustained, monitored, measured and reinforced until the new practice becomes the norm.

13. Innovate

Leaders become pioneers when they are able to apply new ideas successfully with the objective of changing things in a positive way. The act of doing this is also known as innovation. Innovation involves creativity, but the two are not the same. When insight is put into action, or when a new idea is applied successfully, innovation is present. In an organization, good leaders realize that this is a management process that requires specific tools, rules and discipline.
