Differene between US/Japanese Based Development Approaches.

In evaluating the teaming culture prevailing in US & Japanese based organizations different approaches towards their way of work, have been found and are described briefly hereunder.
For example, in large organizations like LG, which are based in US, it is common to have groups compete each other & reward the winning team. While in Japanese Organizations like Sony openly competing with others is not looked upon as an acceptable and respectful way of working. Winning also generates some losers, and in the culture generally making losers instills a bad feeling since there would be a group or individuals who feel embarrassed & those who lose feel a sense of shame & loss of face.
The second stark difference is how the Performance appraisals are conducted. If an LG employee does not do a good job, the person may be replaced. However this seldom happens in Japanese organizations, where one weak group member always finds help from within the group and often the group pulls him together.
In US based organizations, results are the key objective as they are more concerned about the end result and the outcome rather than the process taken to reach there. However the Japanese are more interested in everyone in the team being cooperative & helpful. In US based organizations productivity is more important for them while harmony is considered more important than productivity in Japanese based organizations.
The US managers usually try very hard to let their people know what is to be done, when it is to be completed, & how progress or performance will be determined. The Japanese manager will be much more indirect & vague.
