Logo: How It’s Made
A concept turns into a logo.
Have you ever wondered how people come up with such great logos for their company? Well, here are some basic steps to accomplishing the logo objective.
The first thing to consider is what the company does and what the name of the company is. Does the company even have a name yet? If not.. then you need to name the company. I once had a teacher who gave us the task to come up with a name, a logo, and an idea of what takes place in the building/company. The teacher gave me the topic of “Dance Club.”
Brainstorm! I took out a notebook and a pencil and starting writing down all the words that came to my head when I thought of dance. I even researched the word dance in other languages. Somehow I found my way to Delirious, Delirium, Delirio. The teacher ended up choosing Delirio. Delirio means disillusion in spanish. From there I was instructed to construct ideas of what would go on in the dance club. Once the list was constructed, choose a theme for the club. My theme was forest, or green, laid back (so to speak).
Form Ideas for a logo. Now that there was a name, and an idea of what the club does, as well as a theme for the club, it would be easier to come up with a logo. At this point, you could either write another list of ideas for logos. For example; forest – tree, monkey, snake, frog, vine, etc… Once you have a list (if you construct one), go to the next step.
Pull out the drawing pad and go to work. Start in pencil. No colors. The first thing to decide to come up with is the typeface for the logo name. In this case, I used the word Delirio and made up a font all of my own. (only for those letters in the name).
Draw any idea that sticks in your mind, or follow the list that was previously written (This is what I ended up doing). After all the sketches were drawn out, the teacher decided to choose the frog, font combination of logo that I came up with. This logo is able to stand on it’s own with solely the words or only the logo symbol.
Color Variations… Now that a Font/symbol logo has been chosen, experiment with colors. This step was completed and a different shade of green was chosen for the type and the symbol.
There you have it, how to make a logo.. in short simple steps.
This is a picture of the logo that I created.
