Product placement can significantly boost sales of a product. Jamaican Red Stripe beer saw a major increase in sales of the product on the U.S. market after Red Stripe appeared in the movie, The Firm.

Product placement in film and television has a long history. Businesses use this form of advertising to promote brands such as Pepsi, because it works. People are, to an extent, tired of seeing ads in their environment. Integrating advertisements into a film, or some other medium provides exposure for the brand in a more subtle manner.

Product placement in movies and television comes in various forms. A character in a TV show might casually make reference to a certain brand of pizza, or reach for their TV remote, which just happens to be resting beside a bottle of Jamaican Red Stripe beer.

Businesses that want to have their product highlighted on the big screen usually hire the services of a product placement agency. This agency makes it their goal to find opportunities to place their client’s product in a video, movie, or TV show.

Small businesses, with a smaller budget for advertising, also make use of product placement to increase exposure for their products. The local news is one place where small businesses can get their product mentioned. Getting your product mentioned in a news program or entertainment program produced by your local cable company, is easier and less expensive than going for a spot on a nationally distributed TV program.

Viewers who live in the area around your brick and mortar store are also more likely to travel to your store to check out what you have. They are more likely to have friends who may have used one of your products before and had a positive experience that they can share with them if your product is mentioned in conversation.

If you know a writer, or you are a writer, getting your product subtly mentioned in a book or in a magazine article can increase recognition of your brand and increase profits. How about contributing a fiction piece for the literature section of your local newspaper? The piece could include a casual reference to your business or product. Your product should be evident but not be the focal point of any description in the piece.
