Opening a Resto in Montreal
Some details on the how to process.
When you open up a restaurant there are some tips to remember some come from first hand experience. Your customers will know if you have a fair priced menu or not. The majority of the cost should go for your employees. They will be the spokespeople of your enterprise. The formula for how much should be given to them compared to the business is eighty percent, as I understand it.
Think of the neighborhood you are moving into. If it is a working area fine, there will be a steady flow, as long as the service is decent, there is a good selection of foods and the prices are good. I was told about the area near the Olympic stadium with restaurants that cater to sport clubs. There are enough sports minded people there to make those restaurant owners satisfied. If you are in a downtown area expect the rent to be higher than elsewhere.
Some people know how to judge a move between a peripheral location and the downtown. One has to be sure that you have already secured your customer base before you make that move, otherwise you’ll be alone. If the formula is right loyal customers will follow considering that the distance from one location to the next is minimal. Don’t expect the same clientele to reach you at another end of town and the same goes for other businesses.
The restaurant owner may want to study the demographics of the area before he opens a place and he will want to see what the competition is like if there is any. The restaurant holder may want to carry a variety of foods that suits the neighborhood except in places like the downtown where you will find a bit of everything. It is unlikely for one to expect a high end place to survive in a poorer district although I understand that in the case of Verdun there is currently a mix of affluent, poorer skinheads and artists that will allow for an upsurge of diversified restaurants compared to what was a generation ago. The city center along Wellington had become gentrified attracting clientele that can spend while the side streets still remind me of Verdun years ago.
