Initially the company started in 1985 in the name of RAINBOW with its business in the field of general trading, shipping agency and customs broking at Chittagong. It has been renamed as SANMAR in 2000. The organization runs its business through a number of its member companies the companies are Sanmar Properties Ltd (SPL), Sanmar Construction Ltd, Sanmar Land Development Ltd. (SLDL), Ocean Amusement Park (Indoor A/c Park), Sanmar Capital Management Ltd (SCML), Rainbow Shipping Lines (RSL), Rainbow (C&F), Rainbow Trading Co., Shamim & Company (Export/Import), M. A. Kalam & Company (Stevedoring), Sanmar Rubber Plantation, Sanmar Agro Ltd. & Sanmar Design House. At present core business is construction of Residential and Commercial building. Sanmar is renowned for its quality. Meanwhile SPL has completed a number of high rise residential buildings. Besides, a world class shopping mall known as Sanmar Ocean City has also been completed in the port city of Chittagong.  Both SPL and SLDL are ISO 9001:2000 Certified Companies. Till now SLDL is the only ISO 9001:2000 Certified Land Development Company at Chittagong. Sanmar Dhaka office has also started functioning last year as its’ business horizon is growing up very fast particularly in the field of building and apartment.
