This is how an invalid managed to get a very solid little business up and running at almost no cost to himself

Being a Chronic Pain Sufferer, I can’t work anywhere but home, and then only for a couple of hours each day. I turned to my computer, looking for paid work, but all I could find was “get rich quick” schemes, and other swindles. In the end, I chose to cruise the second hand bookshops, thift shops, and other outlets, where I could buy books for fifty cents or so, and then resell them on Auction Sites.

E-Bay was too big for me, so I settled for a local site here in New Zealand. Only a hundred thousand subscribers or so. However, it works, and by using my brains, I have created a nice little earner. Firstly, I look for non-fiction books, especially of a religious nature, or self-help. I am not particularly religious, but the books sell well, and the buyers become good customers. When listing, I always start the title with ++++ so that it moves the advert to the right of the rest of the listings. I also add the words “Please note – see my other listings as I may be able to save you some postage”

Apart from being true this gets the browsers looking at all my listings, and multiplies my sales. So far, the best price I have had has been $52 for a book I bought for 20 cents. (I almost feel guilty – Chuckle). In just over a year, I have bought and sold over fifteen hundred books. The key is honesty and Service. I don’t tell lies about the condition of the books, and always offer a refund if the buyer is not happy. OK, I might be down a few dollars, but I end up with another satisfied customer.

A really powerful tool is to list under $1.00 reserve. This gets five times the coverage, and gets my auction a lot more attention. If it only gets a dollar, then I break even. But mostly I average $4 to $6 a book. Laugh if you like, but I’m selling 100 books a week, and can do more if I feel well enough.

I’ve submitted this, so that other people who suffer disabilities can find some hope. My little on-line book shop, gives me something to do, earns me a few dollars, and makes me a lot of new friends.
