Being isolated from the traditional 9-5 workplace environment, it is easy for small business owners or the work-from-home to get that motivation slump. There are ways to avoid and eliminate these blues including recognition and acceptance that it is normal to be depressed occasionally.

Motivation is always something that pops up in both our personal and working lives. Numerous books have been written about self-motivation or ways how to motivate employees, for those who have staff working for them, small businesses included.

But what happens when, as small business owners, you get the blues? Foremost, it is important to recognize and accept that it is normal to be demotivated occasionally. Dreams and goals are enough motivation, but occasionally, down moments simply strike. Perhaps, some goals have slipped from being unrealistic. Well, one way to handle this is to break the tasks into smaller chunks. That way, it becomes easier to handle.

Here are other ways to get off motivation blues:

  • Drift to local book shops for change of air and look for inspiring stories.
  • Do something different which you love to do. For example, have a good cup of coffee, listen to your favourite music, or do anything you love to do.
  • Call a friend or someone to have coffee with. Hopefully, that person is not equally depressed to make situation even worse.
  • Concentrate on being thankful for blessings instead of focusing on what you don’t have, or worse, comparing with those above your social ladder.

Simply, the idea is to break the “motivation blue” routine of feeling the dumps. Most especially for those working from home, life can be isolating.  Suddenly, there are no more buddies around, phone calls unreturned, and emails unresponded to. Well, what matters is to change the situation into something positive. Even in the confines of home, other thing can be done to alter the mood and rhythm, until that good feeling takes over once again.
