Most advisers suggest you start with a business plan that accounts for every variable known to man, from your goals and objectives to your potential competitors. While this is important, the key thing is to have a vision of where you want to be and how you’re going to get there. The small stuff can be sorted out in time and any holes in your plan can be filled, as long as you know what you want and are dedicated to achieving it.
Do your research. Family and friends may have raved about it, but you really need to know what the general public thinks of it. Start by talking about your idea on a blog or forum and see what the reaction is. If you have the money to spare, getting a market research company to test your product can be extremely helpful. It’s important not too get too bogged down in research though. It can be a major source of procrastination so act on what you find out.
Don’t give up your day job until youre small business is doing well. Although the temptation to throw in the twoel at the first sign of success can be tempting, if things don’t work out it can leave you in an unfortunate position. It’s hard work doing both but your small business will get off the ground quicker if you have funds coming in.
Budget wisely and always over project your costs. Everything always ends up being more expensive than originally thought so make sure you have more cash than you think you’ll need. If you think it will be a year before you turn a profit plan for it taking two years.
Finally lodge your business name and find a good accountant. Doing this can save you a packet every year.
