This July 4th, be prepared for Independence Day networking. While we all know that networking is the key to any successful business, obvious ideas are often overlooked. Here are some hints to prepare the small business owner for a successful networking bash.

It is easy for entrepreneurs to see a holiday as a day off or as a way to relax with friends but if you want to be successful, you must not only always be ready but you must be prepared. The following steps, if followed, will get you ready to be among the winners of July 4th weekend barbeque bashes across the country.

Step 1: Study up on recent and current military affairs. While World War II is always a hot topic, focus on Vietnam, the Korean War and the first and second Iraqi Wars. If you are prepared to speak on those topics, then when you run into someone who is a veteran, you will make for good conversation. And as many vets start their own businesses, you will be in great networking company if not just increasing your customer share.

Step 2: When speaking with people, there is no need to ask everyone if they were in a war. By simply bringing up the topic of July 4th and thanking the brave men and women of this country who defended the stars and stripes across the globe, a veteran will stand up to thank you for your thank you. And as an aside, if you have friends or family members who are vets, be sure to thank each and every one of them on the holiday.

Step 3: Have business cards or literature available to give out. Better still, be ready to exchange information on your Blackberry or similar device that all small business owners seem to have so that it will be easier to make contact down the line. Failing to trade information at the point of conversation will end your opportunity to network.

Step 4: Even though in business mode, do not lose sight that it is still a holiday and have fun. Some of the oddest situations bring about even odder business partners and by simply being yourself, you will probably be attracting customers. Keep the faith!
