Do you have a business idea that you wanted to implement? Have you always dreamed of working from home and being your own boss? I’ll explain the step-by-step procedures of starting an online business.

Customers nowadays are increasingly finding that ordering things in the cosiness of their home is a much better idea than going to the mall, especially with the escalating oil prices and a shrinking economy.Building a web presence is now more of a necessity for existing businesses, but an online store need not be limited to existing companies. If you have a good concept or a niche product, selling it online makes sense and costs much less than building a brick and mortar business. Although starting an online business is not a complex task, there are a number of basic things that you should do before you start your business and accept online payments.

1. A good concept or product -

To succeed online you need a good idea or a product. You should develop a good business plan, find out about your competition and build the necessary infrastructure before you start your online store.

2. Domain Name -

Domain name is the name of your web presence. You can use the name of your existing company or a related name.  Make sure that the chosen name is not taken and that it is not legally owned by another company.

3. Web hosting -

A web hosting company stores your web pages in their server and makes them available to potential customers. A good web hosting company should have reliability, access to knowledgeable support staff, adequate server space and should provide good bandwidth.

4. Create web site -

You can create a web site by yourself or you can hire a professional. For e-commerce sites, you should invest in a good shopping cart software.

5. Set up a merchant account -

You need a merchant account for e-commerce sites, which enables you to accept online payments. Most banks provide merchant accounts but compare the fees involved and the services provided to get the best deal.

6. Marketing -

In order to get the maximum customers  to your site, you need to market your site. Search engines are by far the most effective and inexpensive tools to market your site.

7. Provide prompt and good service -

Once the customers start flocking your site, provide good and prompt service. Since no one wants to wait for a month to get their goods, it is your duty to deliver them as soon as possible.

Since starting an online business is a serious step, it is important that you have a good idea of the time, money and effort involved. You can start small and scale up later, but consider all the factors and research thoroughly before you take the plunge.  Doing that will save you money and a lot of headache later.
