Start Your Freelance Writing Business
Do you dream on becoming a freelance writer? This article tells you all you need to know to take the first steps to realizing your dream of starting your career as a freelance writer.
Ever since you can remember you wanted to become a writer. Now, you have finally decided to turn the dream into reality. Congratulations, you have just taken your first, and perhaps the most important step towards realizing your dream. By simply deciding to pursue a career in freelance writing, you are one step ahead of other people who always talk about wanting to become a freelance writer but never do anything about it.
But what comes next? Realize that though you made the decision, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to succeed. Sometimes it can take a few years to build up your business to the point where you can make a solid living. The most successful freelance writers are the once who never gave up. With that said, there are some things that every writer needs to do. Here is some advice that will help you start your freelance writing business.
Do Your Research
The research stage is a crucial element of starting your business. Read books on how to write. Find magazines that will tell you how to be an effective business owner. Discover what types of writing you would like to do and read up on how to do it.
Though this is a crucial step, it is easy to overdo it. Some people spend years researching how to start their freelance writing business to help them make less mistakes and be more successful. This is fine, but in reality, experience is the best teacher. The sooner you get started, the quicker it will lead you to success.
Have a Plan
If you have a business, you will need a plan. A lot of writers fail to understand that they are a business and the service they are selling is their writing. And like all businesses, if you do not do some initial planning, it sets you up for failure.
A business plan can be an intimidating concept, but it doesn’t have to be. Basically it outlines what your goals are and how you will achieve them. Unless you need to get a loan, it doesn’t need to be elaborate. There are plenty of resources online or in books to help you learn how to write your freelance writing business plan.
Get Set Up
After you write your business plan you will need to get set up. Will you need an office? How will you organize and file your papers? What about keeping track of your earnings and expenses? The more organized you are at the beginning of your career, the easier it will be to succeed.
If you need help figuring out what to put in your office or creating a filing system or bookkeeping system, you can easily find information online or in a business book. If you want extra help learning how to start a business, you can also take a class through your local college or community center.

Very informative! Thanks.
Hey guys, thanks so much for your comments. I agree, Triond is a great place to submit.
Greatly appreciated. I can not wait to get started and this has started what i hope to be a successful career.
Thanks. I am going to do about a week of research, and then start a soon-to-be-very-succsesfull- bussiness! I want to be an author more than anything, and instead of coming home and playing video games or eating junk food, I hope right on my laptop and start typing or reasearching anything that is on my mind. I am only 9 years old, but I want to start a writing business more than anything. I’m tired of bringing my work into school and my teachers just admiring it and saying, “Caroline this is great!” “Caroline let me show you off!” I want to start my own business. I want to get phone calls with people asking me to write a book or do a writing task. I want to have an office with a filing system. I want this very badly and this is what will help!
Caroline, you are such an inspiration. I wish you all the luck. I am now 49 years old and have only just started to make my dream of writing books a reality. You go girl! Look forward to reading you books one day.
