Stressful Issues Among the Self-employed

Owning a small business can be down right stressful probably 90% of the time.  There are many issues that can cause stress amongst entrepreneurs.  First, having enough cash flow to operate will always to be issue for some business owners.  Second, the liability issues that come with owning a small business are often greater than one might think.  Third, although self-employment can offer flexibility, most of the time your business will follow you everywhere you go.

First, many business have cash flow problems.  To fix this problem many business seek capital from banking institutions in order to produce cash-flow to effectively operate their business.  When businesses are hit with financial crisis it is hard for the self-employed to figure out how much cash will be needed to operate.  Some business owners can only get business loans by offering a personal guarantee.  Personal guarantee can be risky.  If your business goes bankrupt, it will take you down with it. Others might look to outside investors to put money into there business. 

Second, owning a business brings great liability.  As a small business owner you are responsible for employees, and making sure they are paid on time.  Employees depend on business owners to operate a smooth flowing business.  Also, vendors expect to get paid for their services, this could mean you won’t be able to get paid for the week, or even the month! 

Thirdly, self-employment can be wonderful in terms of flexibility, but you can never escape it.  My husband and I have never been on a vacation that wasn’t interrupted by our business.  The business doesn’t stop operating for anyone, not birthday parties, weddings, generally NOTHING!  One must be prepared to devote their life to a business. 

 There are many issues that can cause stress for the self-employed.  Although, there are many perks to owning a business.  Always, remember with the good, will always come some bad.  We the business owners make America a great Nation.
