This is the first step in starting an online business. A good idea/product/service is important for the success of every business – be it cyberspace or in real world.

Having a good concept or product is the first and the most important step. You cannot build a business without a good concept or a good product or good service. While a good idea/product is important, it should also be kept in mind that this should be some thing which you enjoy doing. Even if you have a great idea your business is doomed for failure, if you don’t have a real passion for it.   If you already have a bricks-and-mortar business, you can sell the same products online. The great advantage of Internet is that you are not confined to any location or market or currency to do business. The world is your marketplace and you can effectively use the latest technologies offered by the Internet, to build a web site that interact with and lure potential customers.   Either launching a new product or starting an online shop for an existing product, the two most important things that you need to do at this stage are developing a good business plan and getting to know about your competition, customers and product.

Have a good business plan – As with any real world business, an online business should have a good business plan. Planning is critical to successfully starting and building your business. Once your business is up and running, you’ll need to regularly review and update your plan.

Research thoroughly- Researching thoroughly at this initial stage will prevent bumping into unpleasant surprises at a later stage, when you have committed a lot of time, money and effort into your initiative. Learn more about your product, your competition and your potential customers.  As an entrepreneur your chances of survival are minimal if you are going  to compete against established big brands. Likewise a niche product or a specialized service has much more potential to succeed. Knowing more about the potential customers will enable you to target your marketing with much more effectiveness.

The first step is the only step that doesn’t cost you a dime, but investing your time and effort into this step will improve your chances of success and save you a lot of money later on.
