Tips on How to Work for Yourself
There are basic two reasons why people want to work for themselves. In the first place, there are those who do not want or can’t work for a boss; an employer. In the second place there are those who want to write their own pay checks every month meaning that they want to make money and for this matter for as long as possible.
Whatever the motivation, here are some tips on how to work for yourself:
1. Start or buy a small business: Many people started successful shops or food outlets. Although it is a high risk business, people must eat and therefore a food outlet will make money. Be careful, it is long hours. Here you must take into consideration overhead costs like rent and hiring people.
2. Start a trade-orientated business: This is ideal for the qualified trade’s person. It is easy to set yourself up in a service or repairing trade business. The benefit here is that you do not need formal surroundings – it can be done from home.
3. Start a professional or commerce business: Here you can set up a business in the profession you are qualified in, for instance an accounting, bookkeeping or tax business. The benefit is also that you can do it from home.
4. Start an artistic or hobby-based business: Many people have started successful businesses as a result of a hobby or art they are good at. This is also an ideal home-based business.
5. Teaching business: Many people are qualified and employed in specialized fields who pass on their skills by teaching privately, for instance in South Africa where mathematics became a scarce skill, Mathematic Teachers have resigned from formal teaching surrounding to teach students privately at home.
These are only a few tips to provoke some thoughts. There are many other options one can follow.

Good, sound advice! By the way, as a former private teacher, I can tell that private tutoring is not such a great business… for several reasons: 1) students (if they are kids or teenagers) tend to be irresponsible and may simply not appear to class – you can’t charge them for that every time, the competition is tough.. 2) Payment issues – most pay per lesson – and they tend to forget to bring cash or checks, or other issues may come up such as ‘oh, I have already paid you in advance last week’. I always write things down but my students do not! So what does it help if I have everything recorded but they don’t? It’s my word against a students’ word. 3) This business is very unstable. Today the demand is high, tomorrow it drops down, the day after tomorrow it rises again.. Nothing is stable, I know, but here it is TOO shaky to rely on it as a primary income source. My opinion
With some of these it’s possible to do them part time as well as holding down a full time job, trying them out to see how you’ll get on, getting an idea for the possible level of income you might manage if you progressed to do it full time, and building up a customer base for when you do take that plunge.
Useful hints. Thank you Hendrik
